iPAQ GPS – A Simple Guide

iPAQ GPS devices and mapping software are widely used for quality navigation in crowded urban areas or in the highway networks. With an iPAQ GPS, traveling stops being confusing, the coordinates are easy to identify and the commands to follow. iPAQ has a photo viewing application that allows one to add coordinates to pictures and then store them for later applications. The real photos can be displayed against the geographic coordinates on the map. The iPAQ technology enables users to create an individual mapping system according to personal and business needs. The device comes with marketing tools, access to web portals and the possibility to transfer land and property data for improved business productivity.

The iPAQ GPS provides visual and vocal guidance for the access to the shortest routes that save time and money. The iPAQ GPS model is considered an HP success in terms of computer compatibility too. The prices for the most advanced packages are a bit spicy as not everyone can afford to pay $330 for the HP iPAQ with GPS system, no matter how high tech it may be. The kit includes a Bluetooth GPS receiver and complete maps of Canada and the United States. iPAQ owners will be pleased with the travel quality that this kit brings.

Besides the good parts, there are downsides to the iPAQ GPS too, and you’ll find them explained in lots of online reviews. Considered a bit bulky according to some critics, the receiver makes a good match with the dashboard by its anti-slip features. The more secure alternative is the mounting of the iPAQ GPS on the air vent. It has incorporated Bluetooth technology that makes the wireless connection and the data transfer possible, and the map installation upload can be performed in different radius segments. When you’ve got the maps you can navigate by contact list, by favorite destinations, by specific address and by intersection.

The iPAQ GPS device enables the user to choose various courses of action; thus, you can avoid highways and use alternative roads or you can follow the shortest route to the destination. The software used on iPAQ GPS is less comprehensive than that of similar competitive products, but the real-time information and the turn-by-turn directions are really great. Thus, you can learn about the remaining distance or the estimated time of arrival and also learn about restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and hotels. iPAQ GPS rerouting features are very good and the device is very accurate in helping you get on the right track when you miss a turn.

Pocket PC GPS – A Simple Guide

A personal digital assistant or PDA is often referred to as pocket PC GPS because it combines a Microsoft software for PDA and a GPS device. Pocket PC GPS tracking systems are considered superior to Palm units in terms of functionality but a Palm is easier to use and comes with a larger range of accessories. There are several elements that define a Pocket PC GPS starting from the Bluetooth and the compact flash and ending with integrated features and the GPS cabling if necessary. Let’s have a look at some of these items and see how they influence the efficiency of the combined devices.

A compact flash is required by the GPS device and it has the inconvenience that within the Pocket PC GPS system, it can consume most of the battery power. Moreover, the GPS compact flash required for PDA usage could make the system a bit clumsier than you’d expect. There follows the Bluetooth technology that, if incorporated, saves the problem of cables. Through a wireless system, a GPS receiver located in a backpack could be linked to a hand-held PDA. From this perspective, the Pocket PC GPS definitely proves flexible particularly for car usage where the view of the sky is a necessity.

Since the Bluetooth technology increases the usage flexibility, its adaptation to the Pocket PC GPS solution is a bit more expensive. Even so, lots of people make the investment. The Pocket PC allows for connection with a car-powered GPS unit. Cheaper than the self standing GPS units, these GPS receivers are known as mouse-type. It has another advantage too, that of saving the battery power of the Pocket PC by the possibility to be directly powered from the car batter. The problem with such a combination of Pocket PC GPS comes from its limitation to in-car usage alone.

For varied GPS usage you should consider a hand-held navigation system receiver that can be linked with the Pocket PC with a cable. This Pocket PC GPS combination is working great for out of the car usage. The PDA will display the maps, but the hand-held GPS receiver can be used separately too. Having two gadgets could be annoying and uncomfortable particularly since they are wired, but unless you can afford a more sophisticated solution, you can very well do with it. Otherwise, the combined unit that has a full featured Pocket PC and an incorporated GPS device is a great combination of GPS hardware, mapping applications and Windows Mobile software. This is in fact the Pocket PC GPS unit of the future.

New GPS – A Simple Guide

The new GPS technology has caused many changes in personal navigation, public transportation and vehicle tracking. Any functional GPS receiver gives you access to the orbiting satellites providing information on destination, current location or the shortest route to take. Moreover, new GPS units provide information on traffic conditions, restaurants, hotels, ATMs, gas stations and points-of-interest for the map on which you navigate. Discreet, convenient and highly reliable, the new GPS units represent the beginning of another age in the field of communications and technological development. Depending on the manufacturer, the features incorporated in a GPS unit can differ a lot.

A clear example of how progress works is the possibility to buy new GPS units that have the maps for a certain geographical area already installed. For models that do not have this availability, or in case you need a more peculiar type of application, the maps have to be downloaded with the help of a special software. Other improvements in technology are the touch screens and the increase in unit memory and processor speed. When the GPS is able to work within more advanced parameters then the updates of position and information become instantaneous.

Minimum mounting and wiring: these are two other great features of a new GPS system. These devices are also suitable for hikers, joggers or any other categories of sports activities. The speed of reaction in a GPS receiver is below twenty seconds which means a high level of convenience and comfort for the user. Moreover, the compatibility between cell phones and new GPS devices has improved considerably, not to mention that the design of smartphones combines both types of application. We can now carry the new GPS features incorporated in a cell phone, and just use them when in need. Personal navigation has certainly improved considerably, and we certainly make everything in our power to save time and be efficient.

Another nice feature of new GPS models is the 3-D moving map with turn-by-turn access and huge databases with information of interest. Did you know that a GPS unit can provide not only information on gas stations but also gas price details and venue ratings for restaurants in one location or another? The better the new GPS design, the shorter the time before it can access the satellites and calculate your position. Remember that you can set the distance alert if you need it and should it be the case, try the capacity of your GPS for geo-catching. You should thus be able to create individual maps to correspond to one personal purpose or another.

Finding Your Way in the World – The Different Types of GPS Devices

Google Map GPS Cell Phone Tracker

When it comes to the best handheld GPS systems, the first and only name that pops into our mind is Garmin. This company has been producing the highest quality GPS devices in the 21st century, for a very good price. Garmin’s products are well known for their extremely sensitive positioning and tracking, as well as their long battery life and reliability.

The latest addition to the higher end of the handheld GPS devices’ spectrum is the Oregon series. The main distinguishing feature of the Oregon series is the large, 3-inch diameter touchscreen. Yes, you no longer need a dozen buttons on the handheld unit, which means there’s finally enough space for a large, color LCD screen.

All the models of the series come with many features. Actually, I can’t think of any more really useful features. Here’s a complete list, with some description:

Electronic compass
This is a very useful tool. Most GPS devices can only determine your direction while you’re moving. A digital compass however, will always show your direction with pinpoint (2 degrees) accuracy.

Barometric altimeter
This shows your altitude wherever you are, with 3 feet accuracy. Another important function for hikers.

Wireless unit-to-unit transfer
Now this is a feature I’ve been looking for a long time. You can share trails, waypoints, caches and other information with your travel mates very easily, if they also have Oregon GPS units. No cables or SD cards needed. Be aware that the Oregon 200 doesn’t support this feature.

Other features include:
Custom points of interest, picture viewer, hunting and fishing calendar, geocaching mode, area calculation and many more. Garmin Oregon is the swiss army knife of handheld GPS systems.

Which brings us to the most popular consumer GPS device; the GPS navigating system. The most familiar of these is the in-car GPS unit that shows you map of where you are going and tells you through voice commands how to get there. These GPS devices are either mounted in the cars dash or are portable and can be moved between vehicles. Some navigational units offer a feature whereby you can find restaurants, shopping, hospitals, and accommodations regardless of where you are; this can be incredibly useful when hunting services in a town with which you are unfamiliar.

Oregon 300
The next step, with all the features and 850 megabytes of memory. It costs only 50 bucks more than the Oregon 200, making this the best handheld GPS unit in this price range.

Oregon 400
This model is an extended version of the 300. It comes with 4 Gigabytes of memory and some maps installed. Three versions of the 400 are available:
– 400t, which comes with a topographic map of the US.
– 400c with Bluechart g2, and
– 400i with maps of inland lakes.
All three models cost 600 dollars. Make sure you buy the one with the map you need.

The Oregon series is the choice of the professional hikers, fishermen, hunters and other adventureous individuals. For its price, the Oregon 300 is the best handheld GPS system currently on the market

GPS Receiver

The GPS receiver is the basic device for the operation of the radio-navigation system that uses orbiting satellites to determine a geographical position. The GPS receiver is in fact one of the three elements required by the Global Positioning System, and from the certain point of view, the least significant. The other two vital elements are the satellites and the control and monitoring stations. When the signal is caught by the GPS receiver it is decoded according to three-dimensional factors, altitude, latitude and longitude, also providing information on the time. Anyone can purchase a GPS receiver with the accessories necessary from commercial retailers.

To understand the importance of a GPS receiver, it suffices to say that it is crucial for air-navigation, maritime operations, military moves, emergency services, disaster relief and individual civilian use. Moreover, the GPS system provides accurate timing for mobile phone operations, power grids control as well as banking operations. The GPS receiver is the modern way to be accurate, safe and in control of countless of activities no matter where you are on the globe. If we only consider the efficiency of highways, mass transit systems and streets when coordinated through GPS receivers, we understand the importance of this new technology worldwide.

With a GPS receiver you can identify the vehicle location, as well as get information for the best way to reach destination. From the receiver, the information is processed through a special software that enables the transmission of the information both graphically, on a monitor and vocally, by voice announcements. The vocal feature of the GPS receiver is considered very reliable and safe by lots of drivers because it is a lot easier to follow it than to periodically check the monitor for left, right or street name directions. Furthermore, the possibility to track urban traffic though a GPS device increases the time efficiency of a travel.

Many countries have started relying on the GPS receiver technology to constantly monitor the network of highways and roads. The information available for such systems includes details on maintenance, service stations, supplies, damage to the road system as well as entry and exit ramps. Individual users can also create their own maps with a regular GPS device that has GIS application incorporated. GIS and GPS systems are intertwined and actively support each other.

Palm GPS – A Quick Read

A Palm GPS has the advantage of being able to increase the capacity of the personal navigation system by substituting the graphic display device and offering supplementary portable orientation functions. Lots of Palm GPS products have large displays, quick processors and plenty of memory space. The Palm thus ranges between a stand alone GPS unit and a device that needs computer or laptop connection. The combination of Palm and GPS enjoys worldwide appreciation particularly among hikers. Some softwares are not compatible with palm GPS devices even if they incorporate a navigation system.

Really cheap products usually have this kind of problems. A new Palm GPS version runs on special softwares with hardware advantages such as color screens. It is of paramount importance to check the product features and test them in order to decide whether a certain Palm GPS is a match for personal needs. The connection of older Palm models to modern GPS devices requires some form of adaptation particularly for serial ports. There should also be good memory support for the maps on the Palm GPS and good hardware configurations are the best solutions available here. The eventual incompatibilities can be noticed when checking for the software support.

Changes are sometimes necessary for the software used by the Palm GPS application. The devices should be verified with the vendor and if at a certain time you need to operate changes, take the item to a professional in order to get the best of results. A Palm GPS could be of great help for all categories of travelers, whether you ride the car or you go hiking. The easy navigation conditions and access to real time information are the elements that convince many people to combine a Palm and a GPS unit.

Finally, older users of Palm GPS versions should inquire about the possibility to make updates and improve the technical performance of the items. This is sometimes only partly possible because of the specificity of the Palm and the compatibility of the GPS model with the updates. Usually, manufacturers take into consideration this issue of compatibility with older designs every time they launch a new model, but adaptations are not always possible, and you may have to buy a new Palm GPS rather than update the older system.

ADVANTAGES OF A GPS SYSTEM

locating

GPS stands for: Global Positioning System, and the GPS system constitutes a group of 27 satellites that orbit the Earth, and of these, 24 are active satellites, whereas the remaining 3 are back up satellites. If you are wondering Where to buy GPS Systems, buyagpssystem.com is an excellent source. The GPS system was the idea of the U.S. Department of Defense and was first invented to assist the operations of the United States Air Force.

The principles of Triangulation are what the system is based on, with the 24 active satellites relaying signals to the earth’s surface, which are then triangulated by a device known as a GPS receiver, and on the basis of these signals, a person can pinpoint their exact location on the Earth. To pinpoint your specific location, your GPS receiver should be able to pick up a minimum of 3 signals from 3 different satellites, with these signals being  used to calculate the distance of each satellite from the other, as well as the distance of each satellite from the GPS receiver, resulting in these distances being calculated, and your exact location determined.

To Start:
First of all when we talk GPS, you have to realize that there are different types of GPS systems for different purposes, like: Auto, Handheld and Marine are 3 types.

Car GPS Systems:
A Car GPS System is meant for navigational use while you are driving, and it will typically feature a big display screen so that it is easy to read without taking your eyes off the road for long. Some newer vehicles usually have built-in car GPS systems, thus doing away with the need to buy another car GPS device.Car GPS systems have a street mapping feature, which offers you directions to your destination, and usually the basic car GPS system can be obtained for about $200-$250.

Handheld GPS Systems:
A handheld GPS system is a small and compact GPS device that typically fits in the palm of your hand, and are made such so that they are easy and convenient to use when on foot, bike riding, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, etc.Handheld GPS devices fall into two broad categories: Mapping and Non-mapping, meaning: non-mapping GPS system typically shows your location, the time, compass heading, height from sea level, the strength of signal and the position of satellites, and a mapping handheld GPS system will also display maps in addition to the other features, with both basic handheld GPS units running about $100-$150.

Marine GPS Systems:
The marine type of GPS systems are designed to be used on boats and other sea vessels, with the purpose of helping you to determine your exact co-ordinates so that you never get lost at sea while boating, deep sea fishing, fleet tracking, and various other marine applications. There are differences from other GPS systems, a marine GPS unit is typically weatherproof. These GPS units also feature marine mapping and some back tracking abilities, along with another feature that is exclusive to marine GPS systems, and that is active sonar. You’re going to pay over $250 for a basic marine GPS system.

How To Choose A GPS System That Is Right For You:
You can either be using your GPS device while on foot, or you will be installing it someplace such as your car, boat, mountain bike, etc., so if you are planning to use your GPS system while fishing, hiking, trekking, hunting etc, then the main criteria to look out for is the weight of the device and whether or not it is weather-proof, and if you choose a GPS system that is too heavy and bulky, you will not be able to carry it, thus making it useless. And as you may experience ill weather, buying a weather proof GPS system is an absolute must, and another feature is the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). where your handheld GPS device will be able to pinpoint your location to within 10 feet of where you are standing, which can sometimes be critical for adventure seekers and outdoor buffs, or if you happen to get separated from the rest of your party.

GPS Satellite

The first GPS satellite was launched in 1978, under the direct command of the US military forces. Since then, more then three dozens satellites have been launched on Earth’s orbit, servicing not only military and aviation forces but individual private users worldwide. In the history of the Global Positioning System, more than just one GPS satellite has been lost during launches or afterwards. Some orbiting devices were taken out of service, others were replaced, but what matters most is how the technology is applied in the performance of daily tasks. The decoding of the satellite signal is done by a GPS device or receiver that provides the exact geographical location according to three-dimensional coordinates.

Presently, almost any GPS satellite phone includes a form of navigation with different mapping support and applications. People depend more and more on GPS orientation and problems may appear if replacements do not come for the orbiting satellites that will expire in a few years. At present, there are funding and management issues that seem to act against the proper reconditioning of the Global Positioning System. The US Air Force maintains the entire GPS satellite structure, the economic difficulties put a lot of stress on the managers who lack funds to invest in reconditioning.

At present there are some 31 satellites in service and since only four are necessary to get a fix on the position, the average user will not feel a change if some of the orbiting devices fail to work. There is a certain redundancy in the way information is provided, because sometimes, six up to eight satellites can get connected to a GPS receiver for the same tasks. In the absence of GPS satellite real-time positioning and tracking, consumers would have to start using maps all over again. The military, maritime and transportation systems would suffer most if the satellites are not reconditioned.

In order to offer an alternative to the GPS satellite predominance, European states prepare to launch an independent satellite navigation system in 2010. Besides the USA, other countries that have GPS satellite dominance are Russia, China and India, that operate their own Global Positioning systems. No matter how things are sorted out in terms of policy, implementation and administration at the global level, the average user will not be affected by the different modifications in the way the GPS satellite communication works. More and more people will in fact start using GPS devices for increased efficiency of navigation.

Automotive GPS Is Great, But The Surveys Are Exasperating

This writer once lived in the woods in Britain for over 3 years.  Though I still listen to the radio from time to time, I tended to ignore the massive changes going on in the real world.  I initially heard the alphabet soup term “GPS” while I was still living in America, but always in the area of an army or big law enforcement or rescue agency.  If I heard about an automotive GPS in a radio advertisements, I never knew what they were talking about, and failed to care to discover.

Welcome (Back) To America

Moving back to America, I was in for a dreadful culture shock.  I avoided watching television as long as I could, but my Mom ( who took her wayward child in ) loved it, so the TV was on all of the time.  I might practically pound my head against the floor simply because I couldn’t understand the commercials.  My Mom had to give me an explanation what “bling” meant.  That was a touch bit humbling.

At the time, I took computer lessons and attempted to get my head together.  I definitely needed a automotive GPS to work out what I was doing.  As a lark, I joined many online survey groups.  I started getting free samples, and learned what a car GPS was.  I didn’t have much of a choice I was getting 2 or three automotive GPS surveys a week.

Back In The Saddle Again

I realized that instead of being bothered by geeky jargon, auto GPS dashboard mounted devices were helpful and simply understandable gadgets that would help improve the quality of life.  Imagine if the youngsters of Israel had car GPS units strapped to their donkeys and camels.

They would not have wandered around in the desert for 40 years.  They would have found the best road to The promised Land before dinner.

People of my generation and younger get so easily lost because it is simply too perilous to go anywhere.  Whenever we plan a road trip, we must permit at least three hours to get lost and then find our way again.  Think about the waste of gas.

But with a GPS car tracking unit, you do not have to waste gas or time to get to your destination.  I wonder how much gas is saved just by using auto GPS units.

If I ever go back to the woods, I think I’ll take an automobile GPS device with me.  Perhaps then I could make better choices about my life.

Run with a GPS Watch for Better Results

Exercise is crucial to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Because there are so many exercise options to suit your needs, it often calls for more than a little exploration to decide on the right option for you. However, after you contemplate it, simple is almost always best. Running is just about as simple as you’ll find. Running is something ingrained in all of us. We begin by being taught to stand, then walk, then run. This is employed as a means of achieving a goal of some form or to avoid being eaten. The instinct has been the same since the world was new; the only change is the reason; early man ran to hunt, corporate man runs to make it to work on time. Consider the Garmin GPSmap 378 Receiver for your needs.

Obviously, running is able to be employed as a method of exercise. Your speed, endurance, and heart health could gain the most as a result of running. Running cannot be done in small spaces, and is most enjoyable outside. Even treadmills pale in comparison to running outdoors, where the view is continually changing and the air does not smell of body odors. Tracking your efforts when running outdoors was once a challenge for some. This is no longer so. GPS running watches provide exactly what you need for running in the great outdoors.

GPS running watches are comfortable and resilient. It should not be uncomfortable to wear them even for long periods, and the watches ought to easily endure blows and abrasions. Runners trip just like everyone else, after all. Running watches monitor information regarding your running performance. The most simple running watches have multi-lap stopwatch functions so you can track your lap times for comparison. The number of laps some watches will record differs according to different brands, and watches with memory space to track from 3 to 100 laps are available. A nice unit for you to consider is the  Garmin GPSmap 378 Receiver.

After we seek out more advanced watches, exercising can get more interesting. Heart rate is a useful symptom of your athletic performance: it reveals how much effort your heart is using up for the results you’re achieving. You could be assuming that tracking your heart rate in the middle of a field is complicated, if not downright impossible. Measuring your heart rate does not require electrodes hard wired to a bulky, costly electronic obelisk. Relying on merely an adjustable chest strap and wireless transmission, GPS running watches are able to be a readout for your heart rate. That provides you with the option to check your heart rate any time; you do not have to quit moving.

GPS helps you to track your position in the world, within meters or even centimeters of your actual position. With a bit of modification, GPS could be utilized to observe other kinds of data. By using your coordinates and cross-referencing that with geological data, a GPS system could display your altitude, which is convenient for mountain climbers and explorers. Your rate of travel and direction can additionally be figured, by using point-to-point times and locations. The best thing of having GPS running watches is you are able to monitor where you are, wherever that is! You may want to look into the Garmin GPSmap 378 Receiver.

GPS running watches are diminutive miracles out of man’s invention. Runners, trekkers, or any athlete can find a use for one of these satellite-interfaced wonders.

Why Invest in TomTom ONE GPS Navigator?

TomTom is a company that is best identified with its TomTom GO models that have improved through the years at developing the newest technology for user-friendly and reasonably priced GPS units. Despite the fact that TomTom hasn’t made any updated TomTom GO devices since 2008, people still keep getting the current products for the reason that they consistently meet expectations when it comes to performance and user-friendliness. The single problem that a few consumers face is the cost. Another model to consider is the Garmin 7200 StreetPilot GPS.

The TomTom ONE GPS gives you the answer to this issue. The TomTom ONE is a newer lineup for consumers who prefer to keep some money but value the TomTom’s options. TomTom ONE actually offers several models, including XL models which are widescreen. Unfortunately, only the original TomTom ONE can be purchased in the US. The TomTom ONE has been known for its very low price, in addition to its absence of options and mediocre quality. Fortunately, the 2nd edition was developed with long-awaited design and software developments, rescuing us from the original model. This review will be concerned with the updated 2nd edition.

Look and Design

Looks just may be everything, which is why TomTom ONE is able to captivate with its petite and simple profile with a pleasantly curved top. The TomTom ONE GPS is compact enough to be carried one-handed and is able to be carried inside a shirt pocket. Just by looking at it, a person would never recognize that your TomTom ONE GPS is an inexpensive model.

Setup Process

The setup method is fairly straightforward given its plug and play functionality, and therefore you ought to be able to work with the appliance immediately after you unwrap it. The process involves a step when you need to activate the account online, which you won’t find explained fully in the manual. However; you ought to  be able to locate the instructions you should have about activation on the entire manual found exclusively on the CD. After you activate your new device, you are all set to go.

Navigational Features

The TomTom ONE is especially accurate in terms of positioning and revising as you move along. Once in a while you will notice it somewhat off by 25 to 50 meters, but it still performs more accurately than most other inexpensive portables out there. Its routing capabilities are exceptional too, and you won’t get too many of those frustrating instructions to double back occasionally. This device won’t find the best route possible, but it still does the job. The maps that are in your device have plenty of POIs, yet a few of the signs may not be found on the map, so make an effort to keep the maps updated.

Other Features

TomTom’s sound quality is up to standard even at top volume, when other devices get muddled. The digital pictures and advanced user interface are an agreeable change and will probably induce more GPS fans into giving the TomTom ONE a spin. The battery life leaves much to be desired, lasting a bit more than 2 hours, and it is provided with just a USB and car charger. Another solid car GPS unit is the Garmin 7200 StreetPilot GPS.

The TomTom ONE comes at an agreeable price and the most significant functions do their job very nicely. Consider this device as your pick if you truly prefer to save money.
