Cellphone GPS Comes To The Rescue
Sometimes it’s good that people can find you, even when you’re trying to get away from it all. A fellow named Mathew Scheer was enjoying what he and a lot of other people are doing this time of year, hunting.
After spotting what he called “a pretty good deer” he took off running and soon after started having chest pains. He was able to stay focused and place a call for help from his GPS equipped cellphone. The dispatcher was able to use the track the GPS position and with a little help from Mathew himself, lead emergency responders who were responding by helicopter to his location within minutes.
In less than an hour from the onset of his chest pains, Scheer was receiving treatment at a medical facility. Pretty amazing.
Cellphones made after 2005 have the GPS option available by going to Settings>Phone Settings>Location on you cellphone and activating the 911 settings. It might save you life one day.

Tom Tom Gps
handheld GPS began in 1991 as Palmtop, a business to develop applications for the first handheld computers. Initially those applications were business oriented, but soon individuals wanted personal organizers to keep track of their fast paced lives. Automotive Gps Units
As with most gadgets new models of the same device are always being released. The Garmin Street Pilot GPS line has released their 7200 model which is supposed to be the latest, greatest thing in the world of GPS. The question is-is the Magellan GPS better than the earlier models?
The Features:
• The largest display screen yet at a whopping 7 inches.
• Text to voice command calls out driving directions and gives you a choice of voices.
• Auto calculates routes to any destination.
• Comes equipped with a built in A/V connector which allows you to hook up to a portable DVD player.
• Connects to either a Clear Channel or XM channel for up to the minute traffic and weather reports.
• Has a built in MP3 player and audio book player for driving entertainment.
A Very Entertaining GPS
This version of the Automotive GPS Units comes with many new bells and whistles. You can easily drag and drop music from your computer to your 7200 GPS without the need for extra software. Listening to audio books is also an option-great for long commutes or even longer road trips when regular radio stations are not available.
You also have the ability to hook up a portable DVD player and entertain those kids so you don’t have to hear “Are we there yet?” as much. All in all the Garmin Company has done a great job of adding extra entertainment features but these are all extras. When you’re buying a GPS for driving purposes does this newer and more expensive model really earn its keep?
So does it Get You There?
Most customers of this latest Magellan GPS say the driving directions are very accurate. They love the huge screen which makes reading the displayed maps very easy. The added bonus of being able to pick up traffic and driving related weather conditions via two radio station options (Clear Channel or XM satellite) seems to be a real winner with the users of the 7200 Garmin GPS.
This model also lets you customize your driving routes to avoid certain areas or roads and gets you out of traffic jams en route with a quick recalculation. Most people who purchased this unit also rave about the model’s easy plug and play abilities. Simply mount this gadget to your dashboard, turn it on and you’re ready to start plotting your first driving route.
The Downside
Every gadget has its flaws and this model of the Garmin Street Pilot GPS is no exception. The most common complaints where that this model does not display street names on the displayed map like other, slightly older models do. This can be tricky if you want to plot a new route on the go and do not know what street you’re currently on. On the same note, some users claimed that unless you were driving on a major freeway this Garmin GPS system did not announce the names of the exit routes available.
There were also a few complaints about the mounting hardware that hold the Garmin Street Pilot 7200 in place. The hardware has to be permanently mounted to the dashboard which didn’t go over well with some. Yet others claimed they liked the mounting system and that the Garmin was easy to put in and take out of the mounting system, making it very portable. So it depends on if a permanent attachment to your dashboard bothers you or not.
The Bottom Line
Overall if you’re looking for a GPS that does more than just tell you where to go this is probably the unit for you. Alternately, if viewing street names on your maps is important to you then you may want to skip this newest version of the Garmin Street Pilot and instead try the Magellan Maestro 3200. It does not have all the extras as the Garmin does but it does show all street names and is less expensive.

Discovering How GPS Gadgets Guide Us
GPS units may seem kind of on the expensive side at first glance, but if you take the time to understand how they work, it helps to make the cost more reasonable in your mind. More often than not, we are seeing GPS systems being automatically included in PDAs and cell phones as well as the newest car models. The following paragraphs will endeavor to provide a simple overview of how GPS systems operate. Complete technical details can be found in other articles published on the Internet.
The ABCs of GPS
There are roughly 2500 satellites currently in orbit around the earth. Many of these are global positioning satellites. I know that sounds dramatic, but only about 36 of them are actually in operation. A large number consists of retired global positioning satellites. A low-power radio signal, which can be picked up by your GPS unit, is constantly transmitted by the global positioning satellites. By precisely measuring the distance from three of these satellites, the GPS system can compute its exact position on earth.
GPS systems satellites are nearly seventeen feet across when their solar power panels are fully expanded. They run on solar power and as additional insurance have backup batteries installed. They generally last ten years or longer if all goes well. The longest working satellite is from 1978. That one goes around telling all the junior GPS satellites how challenging it was in his day and how lucky the younger ones have it. Just a little satellite humor there.
But Seriously
So what devices qualify as GPS receivers? If a device is able to receive the signals sent by GPS satellites, it can be regarded as a GPS receiver. Nowadays they can be found everywhere: from the cruise ship to Alaska that your boss enjoyed recently to the new Navigon 7100 GPS in your neighbor’s automobile. The standard cost of a personal GPS systems receiver is about $300. A price tag of $300 isn’t that out of line when you consider that you didn’t have to pay for all those gps satellites to be built and launched into space, nor do you have to pay a fee to use the signals from them.
The US government is responsible for paying the costs required in fabricating and launching satellites into orbit.|Our government here in the US has resolved to take on the costs involved in creating this network of GPS satellites. All you have to do is turn on your GPS system in order to make use of the information that is freely transmitted by them. Hopefully now you have a better understanding of how your GPS system works the next time you switch it on.

Utilizing GPS Naviagition Software For Your Advantage
Are you addicted to watching films that highlight high-tech computer gadgetry that can locate wherever you are just like in the film “Enemy of the State”? Have you ever speculated or viewed it to be so absurd and was just a part of the creative imagination of the filmmakers? Well, think again.
The stuff that we have long been seeing in techno-thrillers are now not just creations of fertile minds but a reality that is being used not to track villains and troubled heroes but is employed in providing steering services. The Global Positioning System or more popularly known as GPS is a worldwide satellite navigational system formed by 24 satellites orbiting the earth and their corresponding receivers on the earth.
The GPS satellites course around the earth and convey digital radio signals that contain data which it conveys to the receivers. Developed and operated by the U.S. Department of Defense it was initially used to supply all-weather round-the-clock navigation capabilities for military ground, sea, and air forces. Now it is also used for cartography, forestry, mineral exploration, wildlife habitation management, monitoring the movement of people and things and bringing precise timing to the world.
As it is now being used in civilian applications, anybody can now appreciate the benefits that the GPS provides. GPS software now functions on Desktop PC’s, pocket PC’s, Palm PDA’s and now also on GPS phones. It can create/generate and direct waypoints and routes a lot easier and even more precise in planning. On the other hand, when you are in the field in which you cannot log on to a desktop PC, you can use your GPS map software to create new paths.
As we continue to evolve, discover and develop new things, we must also put in our minds that part of evolution is changing directions and traditions. We may grow and, as described in countless science fiction films, live in Mars in the future, we must discard the concept of cooperation and unity which is the true backbone of humanity. GPS Navigation systems can make the idea of global unity feasible in the near future by making people work closer together.
